PROGRAMME NOTES

The Awful Truth is dedicated to suvivors of abuse and those who couldn’t stay. The programmatic carriage of the work is the infamous court case of Cardinal George Pell using existing public discourse as a vehicle for the conversation. The case centred on two 13 year-old choir boys who were allegedly assaulted by Pell in the private rooms of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne in the 1990s. Cardinal Pell was convicted of 5 counts of sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16, and 4 counts of committing an indecent act with, or in the presence of, a child. Pell was later acquitted. Due to a legal technicality, the case was quashed by the High Court just over a year into Pell’s six-year sentence. Since then, a landmark High Court ruling opened the path for compensation litigation from family members of the deceased victim, an acknowledgment of the broader impact of historic abuse trauma. With the passing of George Pell on 10th January 2023, the landscape of the conversation has reopened and broadened, with outcomes unpredictable and unknown.
