This work is written as a gift to my mother, Angela Anderson, for her 80th birthday. Composed in 2016, this work explores the playful, tender and complex relationships between mother and child.
Notes to the performers. An expressive approach to rhythm and time is welcome. The resonance of the piano should envelop and support the more fragile qualities of the violin. Spaciousness in the slower sections is crucial to the ethos of the work. Pedaling in the piano should be used judiciously, full pedal in the slower sections and much less in the rhythmic parts. The need for pedaling will vary depending on the acoustic and the instrument.
It is my wish that the performers interpret this work according to their personal emotional response to the work and their artistic vision, and that their input may be an extension of the compositional process.
