Programme notes
The Big Blue was written to honour those who experienced the devastating bush fires in the southeast corner of the Australian mainland in the summer of 2019/2020. Over 2000 people sat on the Mallacoota foreshore in Far East Gippsland while fire engulfed their town and smoke billowed out into the atmosphere. The community of Mallacoota held strong, seeking refuge by the ocean, sharing vital resources, information, and an occasional emergency services cup of tea, searching the horizon for solace. When the close-knit communiy experienced the catastrophic environmental trauma, the adults collectively looked after the children, trying to buffer the impact of what they saw. There is beauty in this kindness. This work looks to the interacting colours of the sky and sea to try and make sense of what happened, as seen through the eyes of young ones.
