Programme notes

If Ben, Melissa and I all share just one thing in comon, it is our love for Rimsky Korsakov’s visionary work, Scheherazade. The stories we tell eachother, and ourselves, are core to what we know to be true as Humans. The Clever Lady is based on a tale called The Lady and Her Two Lovers. It is one such story where a very clever lady finds herself in a predicament only a Very Clever lady could get herself out of in one piece. And she does, with social prowess and the grace of a woman who is accustomed to working within the restrictive confines of bothersom men; she makes it work for her and still somehow keeps everyone else happy, convinced that she has done it all in their best interests. I love this story and the wily, strategic nature of finding freedom in the female form. God Bless her crafty soul.
